02 / Project Overview

The Dragon Carries the New‑Year: A Box Bound for Home

As the old year fades, festive atmosphere awakens amid quiet anticipation. Long dormant within heritage ornaments, the dragon breaks out of old New‑Year scrolls, surging forth from a realm woven of red and checkerboard grids. Rather than merely a printed decorative motif on packaging, it becomes the story itself, dwelling inside this suitcase‑shaped gift case.

The dark brown leather handle holds the reins of this tale. No longer confined to sit motionless upon desks, the box is grasped by human hands. It drifts through dusk‑draped cities, glides past thousands of lit windows, passes through stations and crowds, heading toward the promise of reunion.

Red‑and‑white checkers lay the story’s foundation; coin‑patterned motifs carry sincere worldly hopes; gilded calligraphy whispers inner wishes. The blue‑white‑red dragon gallops freely across the orderly grid. Far beyond merely holding seasonal goods, the case bears waiting, longing, and the urge to meet loved ones.

Lifting the lid marks the story’s turning point. The loud, exuberant festival visuals on the exterior recede, unveiling tender, private hopes hidden within. After its long journey, as the suitcase passes from one pair of hands to another, the dragon’s seasonal blessings finally take form, turning into tangible memories of togetherness.

A portable New Year still life

A portable New Year still life

The flat-lay pairs the red suitcase with envelopes, ribbon, coins, fabric, and a dark wallet. Visible packaging copy: “HAPPY + NEW YEAR”, “2024”, and “LUCKY DRAGON YEAR”, with a large gold Chinese auspicious character

An invitation to open and carry

An invitation to open and carry

The opened suitcase reveals the handle, festive interior graphics, and a gift-ready arrangement, turning the package into a complete portable ritual

Tradition, redrawn in motion

03 / Challenge

Making Tradition Feel Present

The challenge was to avoid predictable festive symbolism and overly nostalgic expression, while preserving the joy, cultural recognition, and emotional warmth of Lunar New Year

A festive world without cliché

Lanterns, reflected light, and a contemporary dragon silhouette translate the Lunar New Year atmosphere into a cinematic, present-day scene

The handle as a point of departure

04 / The Departure

The Journey Begins with a Handle

The handle starts the story. It shifts the package from something delivered to something personally carried, linking the act of gifting with travel, reunion, and shared celebration

Designed for the hand

The handle is shown at working scale: a tactile bridge between the box, the body, and the journey it is meant to join

A gift that enters the journey

A person carries the suitcase through a station, shifting the package from a still-life object into a moving New Year symbol

When the dragon comes alive

05 / The Dragon Awakens

When the Dragon Comes Alive

The dragon is reinterpreted as a fluid, high-energy illustration rather than a conventional festive motif. Moving through the grid, it brings motion, confidence, and a sense of renewal

A system of lucky signs

06 / A Language of Luck

Turning Blessings into a Graphic Language

The checkerboard creates rhythm, while coin, smile, and lucky symbols form an expandable visual language. Gold typography and concentrated navy blue accents anchor a system designed to travel beyond a single package

Rhythm, pattern, and blessing

Gold coin marks and repeated checkerboard cells create a readable rhythm across the surface, with the blue dragon acting as the visual anchor

From graphic motif to object

The final board connects flat graphic elements to the suitcase prototype, showing how the visual language becomes a physical gift object

Capacity becomes ceremony

07 / A Case for Reunion

Made to Hold More Than Gifts

The suitcase form brings capacity and ceremony to the gift. Designed to hold festive treats or curated contents, it evokes the familiar warmth of bringing something meaningful home

A case for reunion

The package is staged beside tea and shared dishes, suggesting a gift that belongs in the room where people gather

Opening reveals another scene

08 / The Unfolding

Every Opening Reveals a New Scene

Opening is a transition rather than an endpoint. The flip-top structure, handle, and continuous interior graphics make the unboxing gesture part of the narrative, moving from festive display to personal meaning

The inside continues the celebration

The continuous red graphics, blue dragon panel, handle, and curated contents show how the visual system travels from the exterior into the private interior

A gift in motion

09 / On the Way Home

A Gift in Motion

Once carried, the package becomes a moving symbol of the season. It enters the city, the station, gatherings, and the journey home instead of remaining a static object on a table

The moment of giving

10 / Shared Fortune

One Gift, Many Moments

The value of the package is fulfilled through sharing. As the gift passes from one person to another, its message becomes part of real relationships and holiday memories

One gift, many moments

Hands meet around the red box, emphasizing that the package is designed to travel through relationships, not simply sit on display

Fortune arrives

11 / Closing Frame

Fortune Arrives

The closing returns to the full object. More than packaging, it becomes a festive symbol: bold, optimistic, and full of momentum, arriving with a wish for good fortune in the Year of the Dragon

The object at the threshold

Placed in a warm entryway with branches and lanterns, the suitcase feels ready to be carried into the next reunion

A bright closing gesture

The red box lands in a clean graphic field, with the dragon panel, gold lettering, and dark handle completing the final visual signature
